ABOUT THIS RECIPE
=====================

Fa gao is one of the Asian recipes I have really wanted to attempt to make and am so glad to find it so simple to recreate at home.

This one is the simplest version of this cake that I always get in Taiwan around new years. ‘Fa’ can be translated to ‘prosper’ and also how the cake ‘rises’. It is often served around Chinese New Years to symbolize a coming year of prosperity.

But that’s besides the point, these steamed cakes use just a handful of ingredients almost always lying around in every household and take hardly any equipment or time to put together. They are kind of soft yet chewy at the same time, the brown sugar once steamed up seems to transform into this other aroma and experience altogether.

Oh and, it’s VEGAN! They are really the most amazing thing had warm from the steamer, but they can be kept airtight in the fridge or room temperature for a while and just nuke in microwave to soften and warm up 🙂 So much nostalgia in this!

What kind of gao or cakes did you grow up with for special occasions? I’d love to know!
